Restaurants in Udon Thani

American - Harry's Bar & Restaurant on Banliam bypass (western ring-road opposite the boat beer garden).
Chinese - Chiants (but the sign outside is Chinese and Thai) next to the Ayutthaya Bank in Prajak Road, a Dim Sum restaurant.
English - Kinnaree in Soi Don Udom (close to the airport) provides English and Thai food.
Fish - Nongsai Fishing Park in Ban Nongsai or Ban Hoolee Restaurant (which tickles my other half because hoolee is a very rude word).
You will need local help to locate these places and to be honest they are only average.
French - The Factory in Adunyadet Road. Can't say any more, I don't like french food, but others say it is good.
Fusion - Good Everything in Phoniyom Road next to Nong Prajak Park. Mind blowingly good food.
Irish - Irish Clock in Sampantamitr Road behind Lum Udom night market.
Thai & English - Greenleaf Restaurant opposite the train station in Prajak Sillapakom gets rave reviews.
Thai (evening restaurant) - Kalasin Goong Pao, Ban Khao (Route 2021) just outside Udon.
There is a Moo Yang in Kut Chap which is pretty good but again you will need help to find it.

Udon Nightlife

Thanon Adunyadet
There are some multi-bar complexes in the heart of Udon Thani city. Visitors of these alleys are foreigners (farangs) only. If you want a mix of Thai and Western style of nightlife, Thanon Adunyadet is the street to go. This thanon (street) is within walking distance of Central Plaza, the biggest shopping mall in Udon. Also Tong Bar as some attitude.

Thanon Adunyadet is rapidly developping into a main (enterainment) nightlife venue. It offers a good selection of restaurants and bars , accomodations , karaoke bars, massage parlors, hair dressors, other small shops and a Seven Eleven which is open 24 hours.

At the end of the street you find one of the biggest internet cafes in Udon which opens untill very late. Some Thai restaurants stay open untill 6 am. "Exotic nightlife" is nearby in the local sois (side streets).

The "farang" restaurants, bars and foodshops include:There is more than enough choice to satisfy even the most discerning visitors: western and Thai, whatever your taste is .

The new apartments on soi 5 offer both daily and long term accomodation. In the other local sois you can find yet more appartments, all at very reasonable rates . Ruysuk Hotel is a very popular choice for westerners and has a new fitness centre/gymnasium. On Soi 1 you can find a budget hotel where you can get a room for only 160 baht. There are also some other places where you can book rooms by the hour, up to you!

During the three days songkrang festival in April, Thanon Adunyadet is one of busiest streets of Udon. You will see locals and farangs throwing buckets of water at each other. Great fun.

Whereas the known multi "farang" bar complexes close at 1 am, Thanon Adunyadet offers 24 hours entertainment. What I particularly like is the availability of almost anything and the very friendly environment.

If you want to visit Udon Thani for only a few days its handy to choose a hotel in the centre. You then can walk to the Central Plaza, night market and to all the Thai and farang bars and restaurants.

Right in the heart of the town centre is the Centara Hotel (before Charoensri Grand Royal Hotel), one of the most luxurious hotels in Udon with two hundred and twenty-five rooms at various rates based on room type and facilities. Centara Hotel is situated next to Central Plaza, the largest shopping mall.

Hotel Ruysuk - UdonthaniThe most popular hotels within walking distance from Central Plaza are:
  • Ruysuk Hotel - Tel: (+66) (0)42-325533
  • Karin Hotel - Tel: (+66)(0)42-326336
  • Top Mansion - Tel: (+66) (0)42-247450

All have modern air-conditioning, hot water and full room service. All are priced at under 400 baht per night.

Long stayers tend to prefer Ruysuk Hotel because they can get weekly, monthly or annual discounts. The owner Joe speaks fluent English. Through the commitment and dedication of Joe and his team Ruysuk has established itself as one of the most popular guesthouse/hotel for tourists from all over the world. It is here easy to make contact with the long stayers in the lobby or the restaurants.

If your budget is limited you can get a room with a fan for only 160 baht per night. I stayed once in Hotel Tweeesap - Tel (+66) (0)42-222531 - at Soi 1 in the centre of Udon, an old hotel but clean and friendly.
Why UdonThani?
The City of UdonThani is the capital of the province bearing the same name. This city is the biggest place in Isaan having an international airport, train station and two bus stations.

Travel agents around the world hardly promote Udon as a tourist attraction although many foreigners (farangs) live here. They discover Udon while making their visa trip to Laos or Nongkhai. Many others come here for the first time because their friends or girlfriend live here. Once they are here they like the city.

They liked it, they stayed.

Comfortable hotel accomodation with airconditioning and hot water shower can be found as from 300 BAHT only. Renting an apartment or house in Udon can be very cheap. A fully furnished air-conditioned apartment can be rented from as low as 3000 baht per month, a Thai style apartment from around 1500 baht per month.

The centre of Udon offers many different kinds of Thai and farang bars, restaurants, shops, massage parlors, hairdressers and tattoo artists - you name it - all within walking distance.

Udonthani is rapidly expanding. Last year the new Udon Plaza opened and soon UD Town, a new shopping complex with all the usual big name franchises, will be finished. MacDonald's in UD Town opened already in December 2009. Big stores like Global Home, HomePro, Toy's R Us, Hush Puppies and countless others can also be found in Udon.

Public and private hospitals are situated in and near the centre. As from january 2010 you can apply your visa at the new immigration office, situated at Udon airport.

You want to go horse racing, play golf or tennis? Here you can find it all.
Tips for travellers going to Udon
Small money upon arrival
When you arrive in Udon by bus or train and you need public transport like a tuk-tuk, a taxi or a samlaw make sure you have small money. Many times drivers pretend not to have change.

No tuk-tuk needed for hotel
You arrive in Udon by bus or train and you don't have a hotelroom, you dont need a tuk-tuk. Within a walking distance you can find some comfortable hotels. Read also acommodation in the centre of Udon

Bar tip
When a bar is bussy pay the drinks after each order. There is then never discussion about the 'checkbin'.

Bar tip 1
If you go to girly 'farang' bars and you want to go out with a girl ask her first before you give her (lady)drinks. Don't spoil her with drinks and leave the bar after few drinks only.

Bar tip 2
You want to go out with a girl from a bar, it's better to ask her in the early evening or in the afternoon. Many girls make appointments with their friends to go disco's around 10pm and then they just wait till closing time and they don't go with customers.

Bar tip 3
When a girl refuse to go out with you today that does not mean she will never go with you. Maybe she have already an appointment for that day. Ask her tomorrow again.

Accomodation and Sightseeing in Udon Thani Norteast of Thailand

Air Asia and Thai Airways fly to Udon Thani from Suvarnabhumi. Nok Air flies there from Don Mueang Airport

You simply will not find a 4 or 5 star hotel in Udon Thani ..... if a hotel is making the claim or a website is making the claim of the hotel .... they are lying to you. there is no such thing as a 4 or 5 star hotel in North East Thailand.

Check out http://isan.sawadee.com/nongbualamphun/
Charoensri Grand Hotel is your best bet in Udon Thani, and its 3 star rating is VERY generous.

AEK International hospital has English speaking staff 00-66-42-342-555. I'm sure they can point me in the right direction. The hospital in That Phanom was cheap but they seemed unable to provide comprehesive testing or adequate medication even with a farang footing the bill.
Sofitel in Khon Kaen is BY FAR the nicest hotel i have ever stayed in in NE Thailand. Sofitel Silom (Bangkok) is damned nice as well ..... but Sofitel Central (Bangkok as well) is a dump. go figure. 5 star is a stretch however. The Oriental is a 5 star hotel, Sofitel is a 4 star at best.

There might be busses from Suvarnabhum Airport directly to Udon Thani, but I think it would be best to go to Mor Chit Bus station, which is thenorthern bus station in Bangkok.

There you can get a VIP bus ,Thai's call it "Rot tour" meaning tour vehicle. More comfortable express bus
Its a long trip about 8 hours and costs about 550 Thai baht.

24 hour public bus service is provided from the Bus Terminal at the Transport Center. Take a shuttle bus (Express route) to the Transport Center
Bus Number 825 - Suvarnabhumi Airport - Nong Khai
Information & Reservation Call Center: (+66) 02576-5599
I suggest calling because I'm not sure of the times I have read it departs at 21:00 and also that there are two buses one at 6:00 and one at 22:30.

You can go up to Mo Chit and get a bus from there for between 500-800 baht. Buses leave between 5 pm and 7 pm and take between 10-11 hours. I would assume the bus from Suvarnabhumi would cost about the same and take the same amount of time.

I hope you can make your way up to Vientiane, Laos .... while you are there. its not that far from Udon Thani and has a pretty impressive temple (cant for the life of me remember the name). you can get a visa at the border, cross into Laos and take a taxi into Vientiane (about 30 minutes). you cannot drive your own vehicle into Laos though ..... just something to keep in mind.

I would call Udon Thani more Isaan than Northern Thai as the cultures are quite different - but I would also say about 50% cheaper as a guide - - last time there I had a very nice hotel for 1000 baht - and that is probably top of the line with very decent places available for 500 thai baht. Lotus Condotel Udon Thani and AEK Hotel are 2 main very affordable options in Udon Thani.

There is a large Night Market that opens from about 5PM to 10:30PM next to the train station.
Chareonsri Center is Udon Thani's biggest and fanciest shopping mall, featuring five floors of shopping, including a large Robinson's department store and a TOPS Supermarket.
Further out east from the centre is a Makro store, cheap for bulk purchases) and a Big C shopping complex (both groceries and assorted goods) with much cheaper pricing than Robinson's.
On the ring road east-side are several large home improvement stores; Home Mart, Global House, and Tool Pro. Also on the east-side ring road is the new Bo Bei Clothing Market.
On the ring road north-side is a Tesco Lotus superstore.

The Chareonsri Shopping Compact is a good place as any to start, a modern shopping center in the inner city full of everything you want to buy what you could, clothes, jewelry, accessories, DVDs, mobile phones, souvenirs, household appliances, photo shoots, and many others article. A supermarket, restaurants, fast-Restaurants, money exchanges, cinema and bowling.
